What is Prayer Evangelism?

by Pastor Greg Pagh, Chair, Bless Minnesota

Prayer Evangelism is a lifestyle of Christian witness based on Jesus’ teaching to his disciples in Luke 10:1-9. The principles of Prayer Evangelism are taught by Ed Silvoso in his groundbreaking book, “Prayer Evangelism” (Regal Books, 2000).

There are four key steps to Prayer Evangelism. They are interconnected, and to be most effective, must be applied in the order that they are given as we reach-out to others with the love of Christ. These four key steps are integral to the Bless Minnesota – Adopt Your Street in Prayer initiative.

They are:

1. Bless: speak peace to people and systems in your sphere of influence. (Luke 10:5-6)

2. Fellowship: build relationship with those outside the kingdom of God. (Luke 10:7-8)

3. Minister: respond to their felt needs in the name of Jesus. (Luke 10:9a)

4. Proclaim: announce that the kingdom of God has come near and is available to them through Jesus Christ. (Luke 10:9b)

Ed Silvoso says that Prayer Evangelism starts by “talking to God about our neighbors before we talk to our neighbors about God.” When we enter situations speaking peace and bringing a blessing… when we build relationships with others based on love and trust… when we respond to the needs of others with tangible acts of kindness… the Holy Spirit breaks down defenses and prepares people’s hearts to receive Christ naturally.

TransformationChurchesand Kingdom Companies are discovering that these principles of Prayer Evangelism can equip every “member” to become a “minister” within their unique Circles of Influence. The principles of Prayer Evangelism must become a lifestyle that is lived-out in our homes, churches, schools, workplaces and communities if sustained transformation is to take place.

In Luke 10:17-19 it says, “The seventy-two returned with joy and said, ‘Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.’ He (Jesus) replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”

As we reach-out to those around by adopting our streets in prayer, we do so knowing that we carry the authority of the name of Jesus as well as protection from every evil. Together we will see Satan fall in our cities and the spiritual climate change.

Ed Silvoso says, “Jesus is not merely a message to be preached; He is a proactive Savior. He is ready to prove to the lost that he came into the world to save sinners by performing miracles when they need them the most. This is the heart of prayer evangelism and, when properly implemented, it is capable of doing much more than leading a few neighbors to the Lord. Prayer evangelism can change the spiritual climate over entire cities and nations!

This is the heartfelt desire of Bless Minnesota– Adopt Your Street in Prayer… that our cities would experience the love, grace, presence and power of Jesus to set people free!
